Umbro's David Blanch talks to the Britain's shirt collectors

Hidden on the 2003 England home shirt, Umbro Senior Designer David Blanch designed a secret strip of raised dots that contained a hidden message in Braille that only blind kids could read. If you’re excited by this revelation, read on, as this blog is for you. “I like doing naughty things like that,” Blanch told me exclusively, at Umbro HQ, this week. “In a world of mass manufacture, I like to put my own stamp on things.”

Back To My Grass Roots

In Blog, Football on February 14, 2010 at 7:05 pm

I’ve missed playing Sunday football. The chaotic convey of cars, the water-logged pitches, the tears. Anyway, it was valentines day, so the team I trialled for, London Romans, was missing a few casanovas and I found myself on at left back, versus Falcons.

In Blog, Football on February 9, 2010 at 6:50 pm

The new England shirt has been announced in spectacular style, by Kasabian, live on stage in Paris. I was invited last week for a sneak preview of the shirt by Umbro, and have been commissioned by them to write a blog about my opinions, which was very flattering. I’ve just finished it, and it should be online shortly, along with the opinions of various other shirt afficionados.. Watch this space. Meanwhile, here are some photos of the shirt itself. I’m obviously dead interested in football shirts and parts of my match-worn collection are currently exhibited in the National Football Museum. Below, you can follow the links to my official Umbro blogs, which are in the main really geeky affairs, looking at the history of Umbro and football memorabilia.

Enjoy!

Going, Going, and now GONE: My Football Shirt Collection

In Football on October 2, 2009 at 2:10 pm

I used to pick up shirts worn by players you see, and I got carried away. At one point I had about 200- mainly from my beloved Spurs. As you can probably guess I’m now considering selling the lot. Apart from Klinsmann’s debut shirt, I think, which is currently on display at the National Football Museum, Preston. Do read on…
